Bradford Bio

Artist's Statement - Gene Bradford

I've worked for a couple of newspapers, had two portfolios published, shown several prints in an upstate New York gallery and been lucky enough to have had several of my other shots published as well. During this 40 year love affair, the honeymoon has never worn off.

I use a 35 year old Mamiya C220 medium format for my large prints, an Olympus OM-1 and OM-10 for macro work and my Fujifilm S5000 for digital work. I use an 80mm for "normal" work and a 180mm for "short" telephoto work with the Mamiya. The OM-1 and OM-10 bodies both have 50mm lenses for "normal" work as well as 28mm and 200mm lenses for the other shots I might encounter. While the S5000 has a fixed lens, it allows total control of all other aspects and I consider it the ideal digital for my needs.

I've always done my own B&W darkroom work since I feel taking the shot is only the first half of achieving a good print. I use a Nikon EL-Nikkor 75mm lens for the medium format negatives and a generic 50mm lens on the enlarger for the 35mm negatives. My main choice for an enlarger is the 25 year old Omega B22 my daughter found for me. (It's amazing how long good equipment will work when it's quality made!)

Anything I produce photographically should be considered a "work in progress". With a little skill and a lot of luck, hopefully I'll learn from my past and produce images which are more than just "pretty".

Thanks...Gene
